Patchwork of Memories interviews for coloring book 2008

Each year as part of Passport to the Past, local students create a coloring book to give away as a prize during Covered Bridge Festival activities.  Below are pictures of students interviewing local citizens about their memories of Madison County, Iowa.  Fun was had by all who participated.

Adventure Day A Success

Saturday, September 6, 2008 proved to be a wonderful adventure for all 28 participants.  We started out at the Madison County Historical Complex where Carol Liechty gave a quick lesson about the Jesse Hiatt Delicious Apple.  We then loaded the cars and drove to the site of the tree where Mr. Dick Tracy met us with photos and information about the current tree being from a sprout of the previous Delicious Apple tree.

The site of the original Delicious Apple Tree

Sunday I was treated to my first visit to the site of the original Delicious Apple tree.  A dear friend, Carol Liechty, took Ruth Tucker, a 99 year old Madison County resident, and I to see the tree.  Of course, the tree standing now is not THE original tree, but it is a decendent of the original tree.  It has many green apples on it right now and some are just starting to turn to their red glory.   Be sure to stop by the Passport to the Past tent during the Covered Bridge Festival to hear stories from 99 year old Ruth and for more information on Jesse Hiatt and his great discovery!

Thank you to our community and all who donated items for the garage sale.  It was a huge success again this year.  A special thank you to Carol Liechty, Connie Ascione, Kristin Knutson, Mina Jean Slater and Shirley Parkins  for sitting and helping with the sale itself.
